I knew God gave that Scripture to me for that exact moment in time. My son was meant to walk—and run! It was as though God had given Mike and me something to hang on to in order to believe in and claim Daniel’s healing.

The Power of Praying God’s Word

From then on, at every diaper change I would pray for Daniel’s leg and foot, and say out loud, “Daniel, you are going to run and not be weary and walk and not faint. Son, one day you are going to stand up and walk!”

I would like to be able to write that the first time I quoted that Scripture over Daniel he suddenly stood up and walked, but it didn’t happen that way. As I mentioned, we first received the report when Daniel was ten months old and we were living in El Paso.

Two months later our El Paso home sold and we moved to Weatherford, Texas. Daniel’s first birthday came and went, and he still couldn’t stand on his own or pull himself up. I kept quoting Isaiah 40:31 over him, and little by little he started improving. One day when Mike’s mom was holding him, he pulled up and stood. However, he still could not maintain balance and walk.

The months passed by until Daniel was almost seventeen months old. One Wednesday night we were in church. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something small trundling down the center aisle of the church, and sure enough, it was our little Daniel. He was walking completely on his own, and not holding on to anything. Plus, he had a big smile on his face.

Praying the Word works!

During the time that I was standing upon the promise of Isaiah 40:31 for Daniel’s healing, I also came across a book by Germaine Copeland entitled Prayers That Avail Much (Harrison House). The book was made up of prayers, containing Scriptures that could be used for various categories of needs. What I read about praying the Word impacted me so greatly that I started planting Scripture deeply into each prayer, with amazing results. I once heard someone say that the Word works for those who work the Word.

As I started writing this chapter, I wondered if there was a story behind Germaine’s writing Prayers That Avail Much? Since reading her book nearly thirty years ago, Germaine and I have become dear friends, so I called her up to ask her.

I could tell she was smiling when she answered my question. “Why, yes,” she said, “I started studying about praying the Word during a very difficult time with my son, David.”

Here is her story gleaned from our conversation:

“In the early ’70s I discovered that our son was into drugs. This drove me to study the subject of prayer in the Bible. One particular Scripture that stood out to me was James 5:16b: ‘The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much’ ” (KJV).

Germaine went on to explain that if some prayers were effectual, then she reasoned some were ineffectual.
